I started listening to shortwave radio in the early 1970s with my Ukrainian immigrant grandparents. Due to limitations of space, I cannot give a detailed history of the beginnings of shortwave radio, but if you are interested, I highly recommend the book On the Shortwaves, 1923-1945 by Jerome S. Regarding ocean liners, The Wireless Ship Act of 1910 required that all ocean vessels, with a capacity to carry 50 or more people, have radio equipment on board for emergencies. Before this time, amateur radio operators, or HAMs as they are commonly known today, built their own equipment to listen in on ocean liners and military transmissions as well as speaking to each other over long distances. These radios began being sold commercially in the 1920s when commercial radio stations started broadcast programming which consisted of news, music, dramas, and other programs. Some of these later radios also had the ability to pick up MW (Medium Wave) as well - you know that as commercial AM radio which receives broadcasts from 520 kHz to 1710 kHz. Ever see a picture of a family in the 1930s or 1940s huddled around a large wooden radio receiver in the living room? Well, that is a shortwave radio which is a true AM receiver that receives broadcasts in the 1900 kHz to 29999 kHz frequency range (or 1.900 to 29.999 MHz). No external boxes, interface cables or power supplies needed - no clutter on your desk.During WWII, there was no CNN, but Americans could listen in on European government broadcasts and even military radio traffic right in their homes.

In addition to the flexible and friendly user interface, with its numerous functions and facilities not normally available on any conventional receiver, the WiNRADiO G303i receiver excells particularly by the ability of its demodulators: While the Standard Demodulator provides performance of a highly respectable shortwave receiver including synchronous AM demodulation and a real-time spectrum scope, the optional Professional Demodulator offers even more: continuous IF filter bandwidth adjustment (in 1Hz increments), interactive block diagrams with two additional audio spectrum scopes, and even inbuilt THD and SINAD measurement facilities.Īn optional DRM decoder/demodulator is also available.

So, if you own a PC, the chances are that you already own an important part of a software defined radio receiver! Usually this means using a DSP, but in the case of the G303i, this processing is done on a personal computer using a sound card (most modern PCs are now faster and more powerful than many DSPs were only a few years ago).

The WR-G303i is the first of our G3 Series of software defined receivers.Ī Software Defined Radio (SDR) is such where demodulation and last IF (intermediate frequency) processing are done entirely in software. The WiNRADiO G303i: A ground-breaking shortwave receiver that will surely amaze you. The WR-G303i receiver is also the first commercially available receiver where the entire final intermediate frequency stage and an all-mode demodulator are entirely executed in software, running on a personal computer.

The "G3" stands for "the third generation": As the original, award-winning, first-generation WR-1000i receiver was the world's first commercially available wide-band receiver on a PC card when launched years ago, the newly introduced WR-G303i is the world's first dedicated shortwave receiver on a PC (PCI bus) card. This award-winning low-cost receiver continues in the fine tradition established by WiNRADiO's successful range of wide-band PC-based receivers.
